Yep, it’s true! The earthquake Center calls them crypscisms! If you should ever experience one of these while walking on the ice, I am sure like me, your heart will jump into your throat. The only danger is if the ice is not attached to the shoreline all the way around the body of water. In that case you have a situation similar to the skaters off of the Charlotte Beach last month.
